All weddings are magical, but outdoor weddings are exquisite! There’s something to be said about getting back to nature when it comes to saying, “I do.” Whether it’s basking in the glow of a gorgeous sunset or reveling in the calming presence of old-growth forests and rustic, sun-dappled vineyards, an outdoor wedding at Hermann Hill is simply breathtaking.
Tips for Planning Your Outdoor Wedding at Hermann Hill
Plus, at Hermann Hill, our outdoor venues are safe and comfortable for both you and your guests. Our creative wedding coordinators have shared these excellent tips for planning a most-memorable outdoor wedding celebration. Check them out today!
Have a Back-Up Plan
Regardless of your planning efforts, there’s no way to control Mother Nature should she decide to throw a temper tantrum on your special day. Prepare to tame that temptress by preparing a backup plan in case of hot, chilly or wet weather.
We’ve got you “covered” at Hermann Hill! We have multiple venue options that make it easy to accommodate quick changeovers from outdoors to indoors when necessary!
Unlike most barn or open-field venues, Hermann Hill offers paved, well-lit areas for both yours and your guests’ safety. After your reception comes to a close, the last thing you want is to have to rely on a local farm tractor and chains to pull out your guests’ cars—in the dark!
When you choose Hermann Hill as your wedding venue, you can assure guests that they will have smooth access to the ceremony and reception venues, along with adjacent and air-conditioned restrooms.
All ceremony and reception sites at Hermann Hill, including several of our lodging rooms, are handicapped accessible.
Track the Sun
Here comes the sun, doo-doo-doo-doo, here comes the sun. Remember that old Beatles song?
Who doesn’t love the sun, so long as you do not have to stare right into it? When planning your ceremony site, take into consideration where the sun will be when you say, “I do.” Seat guests so that the only thing that blinds them on your big day is your radiating love for each other, and not ultra-violet sun rays.
Create a Timeline
Know what you want to happen. If your wedding is later in the day, the setting sun provides a soft glow creating the perfect ambiance for the ceremony. A glorious sunset allows for magical photography of your special moments, and while you’re at it, why not plan a drone pic of all of your guests during this time?
Keep Everyone Hydrated and Comfortable
Nothing makes guests feel more comfortable than a refreshing drink on a hot day! Have drinks available that are weather-appropriate for your guests, such as water, ice tea, and lemonade during the warmer months; coffee, hot chocolate or hot tea during colder weather.
You could also add additional comforting amenities like sunscreen, fans, or hand warmers, depending on the season. That’s Midwestern hospitality at its finest—something we at Hermann Hill know quite a bit about!
Fun Ideas for an Outdoor Wedding
Here are a few more ideas that our wedding planners would love to help you plan as a part of your big day outdoors!
A BBQ wedding dinner may usually be associated with a western or rustic theme—but it doesn’t have to!
We already mentioned a sunset wedding ceremony, but why not consider planning a sunrise ceremony? This is a beautiful way to celebrate an elopement!
If there will be a lull between the ceremony and the reception, why not Include lawn games to give guests a source of entertainment? You could even plan an entire theme around it.
Add frozen cocktails or spiked hot cider or hot chocolate to the drink menu for a change of pace.
Dinner on the rocks is a lovely alternative for an outdoor reception, and Hermann Hill’s Celebration Point is the perfect place to share a meal.
The possibilities are endless and can always be customized to fit your style!
